Ranati soup Festival of the First of May

Municipality of Barete
Ranati soup Festival of the First of May
The event takes place every year on May 1st in Piazza IV Noci in Barete, located in the heart of the province of L’Aquila, to celebrate the authentic cuisine of the region. At long communal tables, attendees can enjoy the results of slow-cooked Ranati, a traditional and labor-intensive soup made from cereals, legumes, and vegetables, prepared by the skilled chefs of the Proloco. Chickpeas, grass peas, lentils, corn, wheat, spelt, and other grains are cooked from early morning and then combined with the remnants of pork seasoning. This event has been held for decades and reflects the collaborative effort of the local community, symbolizing the agrarian culture’s spirit of reciprocity with the wider world. It mirrors the tradition when the soup was once shared with the poorest families, who would sing the following verses in gratitude: “Ranà, ranà, scia bennittu chi ci ji’a/ tanti aghi ci nne’a tanto sacchi ne pozzi refà” (Legumes, cereals, blessed be he who gives them to us/ you will offer us as many grains, may you collect as many sacks).
