Holy Mary of the Lights
Legend has it that the sanctuary was built on the site of a miraculous phenomenon, where numerous floating flames ascended the hillside, illuminating the night. The tale recounts that one day, while farmers were working in the fields, they noticed a moving bright light. Drawn by curiosity, they approached and discovered a statue of the Madonna and Child, bathed in the glow of the flames, known as the Lumi. This extraordinary event, which took place in 1466, inspired the construction of the monastic complex that still stands today. The complex houses valuable frescoes and artworks of great historical and spiritual significance and serves as a home for a community of friars.
To this day, the sanctuary remains a destination for pilgrimages and religious ceremonies, the most significant occurring in April. During this event, a solemn procession takes place, in which the effigy of the Madonna dei Lumi is carried on the shoulders of the faithful, accompanied by prayers, religious hymns, and the lighting of torches. The procession departs from the church and winds through the town’s main streets, creating an evocative and reverent atmosphere.
