Feast of Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows
Saint Gabriel was born in 1838 in Assisi and, in 1856, entered the Passionist convent of Isola del Gran Sasso, where he remained until his passing in 1862 at just twenty-four years old. Despite his brief life, he distinguished himself through deep spirituality and a profound devotion to prayer. His veneration spread rapidly, leading to his canonization by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.
The widely celebrated feast of the saint takes place at the end of August, with groups of pilgrims setting out on foot the night before the anniversary and reaching their destination in the early morning hours. The religious program features hourly masses led by various religious figures. In the afternoon, the sanctuary’s renowned bell concert, famous throughout Europe, resonates powerfully. The celebrations conclude with a solemn procession, during which the urn containing the saint’s mortal remains is carried through the town, accompanied by thousands of devotees and the solemn strains of the marching band.
