Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot

Municipality of Montereale
Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot
Saint Anthony the Abbot is honored as the protector of animals, and it is customary to bless livestock on this day, as the loss of animals in an agrarian economy historically led to famine and social crises. In the Alto Aterno region, various domestic rituals are observed in his honor. Traditional dishes like Paniccia and colenne, a minestrone made with rice or spelt, are often prepared by wealthier families and given to those in need. In the hamlet of Cesaproba, considerable effort goes into organizing the festival. Children do not attend school on this day, instead starting early to go door-to-door collecting bread and small coins in their pillowcases. In key spots around the village, large grills roast street food, and mulled wine is served, all accompanied by the sounds of bagpipes and barrel organs. In the morning, a procession carries the statue of Saint Anthony from the Church of Santa Maria Fluttuante to the Church of Anime Sante for a mass. Afterward, the procession returns to the original church, where the parish priest blesses the animals, followed by a display of fireworks. As evening falls, a large bonfire is lit in the square, symbolizing Saint Anthony’s power over the devil, filling the air with the scent of cinnamon and lively music lasting into the night.
