Dead Carnival
The ritual marking the end of Carnival—and its satirical portrayal of death—takes place on Ash Wednesday, ushering in the Lenten season. The community takes part in the funeral ceremony, which begins with a wake and culminates in a solemn burial staged in the town’s main square. Performed by local participants, the event is now structured as a theatrical performance under the artistic direction of Vincenzo Macedone. Key figures in the ritual include the grieving widow, the archpriest, and the town band, who accompany the different stages of the ceremony. Inside the coffin, the deceased Carnival is represented by a real person, becoming the target of mockery and derision, following a tradition common in certain regions of central and southern Italy. This celebration serves as both social satire and a symbolic inversion of roles, offering a parodic critique of established authorities and a ritualized form of protest.
