Chestnut Festival
This Festival celebrates the Marrone della Laga, a unique variety of local chestnut that elderly residents have grafted onto existing tree stumps in this remote part of the Monti della Laga, resulting in large, sweet, and flavorful fruit. The ‘I fere Association has been dedicated to organizing this traditional event since the 1980s, held in Leofara, a village in Valle Castellana, at the end of October.
The dates of the Festival are determined based on the fall of the burrs. During the Festival, a wide range of dishes are offered: roasted chestnuts, sausages, polenta, cheeses, chickpea soup, chestnuts and mushrooms, gnocchi with wild boar ragù, fried cheese, fried pork with chestnuts and apples, and desserts. In addition to the tastings, there are guided tours of the chestnut groves, live music performances, and other entertainment activities. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience the hospitality and culture of the region, enjoy the fresh air at over 1,000 meters above sea level in Leofara, and immerse yourself in the music and festivities.
